I am attaching an interesting article that ran in the Sampson Independent about Sherman’s Army coming through Fayetteville, Blockersville (now Stedman), and parts east of Cumberland County, and into Autryville and Sampson County.

1862 Recruiting Advertisement
RECRUITING! – Cumberland Plow Boys. According to a late act of Congress, the Company must be increased to 125. As all men between the ages of 18 and 35 are declared in the service, here is a good opportunity for 50 to volunteer in an old organized corps. Send your name and address to Col. John H. Shohola Train Wreck
While working on recompiling a roster of troops for our area, I came across some information that I had originially discovered back in the early 90s. A good number of soldiers from Cumberland County had died in a train wreck at Shohola, Pennsylvania. Continue reading
